Thanksgiving dinner out

Away from home this Thanksgiving? Everyone weighs in and MiBA finds a table the whole group is thankful for.

Start a gathering

Not everyone goes home for Thanksgiving. Some live too far away, some can’t get the days off, and some live in a country where the fourth Thursday of November is an ordinary working day. Nobody wants to spend it alone, and nobody wants to roast a turkey for twelve in a small kitchen. A dinner out with the people around you is the answer, once the group agrees on where.

  1. Abroad, Thursday is a workday

Outside the US, Thanksgiving Thursday is a normal weekday, so the hour matters. Pick dinner, the Thursday, and an hour late enough for everyone to get there from work. If Thursday is too hard, offer the weekend after as well, and each friend says which days don’t work for them. MiBA picks from the days that are left.

  2. A table for the ones who stayed

An expat crowd, colleagues far from home, students who couldn’t fly back: Thanksgiving out often brings together people who don’t share a hometown, or a tradition. Each friend answers on their own, saying what they feel like eating and the vibe they’re after, so the friend who is happy to skip the turkey can say so without a debate.

  3. Budgets and diets, handled fairly

Each friend says what they’d like to spend, and places over the group’s budget are left out. A place someone ruled out is never suggested. Budgets and no’s stay private. Dietary needs are saved on each friend’s account, and places that show they cater to them come first. MiBA says so when it couldn’t confirm one, so you know what to ask when you book.

  4. Vote, then pass the gravy

MiBA ranks the restaurants that suit the whole group, you put up to five on a shortlist, and everyone votes. You get a link or a phone number to book, and everyone hears where and when. If a Thanksgiving menu matters to the group, ask about it when you book. Then go round the table and say what you are thankful for.

Starting a gathering is free. Everyone signs in to answer and vote, and MiBA remembers their name and dietary needs for next time.
